Sports news: A new NBA dynasty begins to emerge

By MELISSA MATHEWS Associated Press • October 24, 2018 05:03:37 New Orleans Pelicans guard D’Angelo Russell, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft, has announced his NBA career is over.

Russell’s decision was announced by the team on Twitter Saturday afternoon.

He has been out of action since undergoing surgery for a torn ACL.

He had averaged 5.3 points and 3.3 rebounds in five games with the team.

He played for the Pelicans’ D-League affiliate in the Rio Grande Valley Vipers this season.

Russell had spent most of his career with the Memphis Grizzlies, and he had been expected to join them in 2018-19.

But he signed with the Pelicans on Feb. 18 and played his first NBA game with the club in January 2019.
