Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Jameis Winston has been arrested for a shooting that occurred during the Buccaneers game against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, the team said in a statement on Monday.
The incident took place after the Bucs and Falcons met in the first quarter of Sunday’s game, when Winston was hit by Falcons linebacker Vic Beasley.
Bucs coach Lovie Smith was quoted by the Tampa Bay Times as saying Winston was “just trying to keep the play alive.”
“A few minutes later, he got hit by a Falcons player and a police officer and that’s when we got called in,” Smith said.
“It was pretty intense and we were all concerned for his safety.
So we called in the police.””
It’s just a terrible situation, a terrible tragedy, and it’s a shame that it happened in front of us,” Tampa Bay Mayor Bob Buckhorn said in the statement.
